Joseph
and the Amazing
Technicolor® Dreamcoat
Lyrics
by Tim Rice
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the second musical
theatre show written by the team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim
Rice. (The first was "The Likes of Us", a show which was
written in 1965 but which did not receive its first stage performance
until 2005). Though an early 20-minute long version was performed
in 1968 by the Colet Court School in London, and the show immediately
began to grow and evolve, it wasn't produced on Broadway until 1982,
where it played for 749 performances.
In
this retelling of the Biblical story, Joseph is a handsome young
man who is his father's favorite child, able to interpret dreams,
and the bearer of an amazing coat. These facts lead Joseph's eleven
brothers to become jealous and they sell him into slavery. Because
of Joseph's charm and goodness, he rises through the ranks of slaves
to a position of power, and is able to help his brothers and reunite
his family.
Joseph
and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a lighthearted, family-friendly
show with catchy tunes and lots of visual fun. Because of this,
it's one of the most reliably successful shows in musical theater
history, and has many successful professional productions with stars
ranging from Donny Osmond to Rikki Lee Travolta, as well as having
been performed in over 20,000 schools and community theaters.

and the Amazing Technicolor(r) Dreamcoat is produced through an
